I had been chasing-down a particular aesthetic — some kind of combination of digital “glitch” effects, integrated circuit topography, and the dense, linear, urban wreckage of Katsuhiro Otomo’s AKIRA manga — and found myself making small bitmaps manually, using conventional paint tools to do it. A lot of pixel-pushing, a lot of copying and pasting, a lot of flipping and rotating, and a lot of time went into some very small pieces. It didn’t take long to start thinking that I’d be better served just writing a program that did the same sorts of operations that I’d been doing by hand. The computer could repeat these operations endlessly in a somewhat-steerable pseudorandom fashion, and I could select the best output as it came along.
